Bargaining Committee Update – 46 – Registration for Zoom Roadshows

Dear Members,

As we advised you earlier, the Union completed mediation with Air Canada/Air Canada Rouge with the assistance of our Chief Mediator William Kaplan.

We have reached a tentative agreement. This agreement will be presented to you during upcoming Zoom Roadshows, followed by a ratification vote. Your right to vote on your wages has been preserved, and we will review this in detail during the presentations.

Below are the dates and registration links for the various Zoom Roadshows. The same information will be shared in each Roadshow, so we ask that you only register for one date so that everyone has a chance to attend.

Bargaining Committee Update – 44

The Company reached out to the Component President today, and we moved forward in our continued attempts to reach a fair deal.

The Union is currently in meetings with Air Canada, with the assistance of Mediator William Kaplan, in Toronto.

These meetings started this evening, and we will keep everyone posted on how they move forward.

At this time, the strike is still on, and the talks have just commenced.

In solidarity,

Bargaining Committee Update – 43

We have heard from many members and have had the great privilege of meeting many of you face to face. We know and feel that you are behind us 100%. We want everyone to be aware and understand that we are behind them to the same degree. We have been working around the clock to ensure that all members are returned to home base. We will leave not one single member without assistance, information and resources. Our journey is together and together we will prevail.

The Canada Industrial Relations Board has declared the strike illegal. However, the consequences for remaining on the picket line have not changed since yesterday. Members are reminded that it is not a criminal offence to remain on the picket line. While union leaders may be subject to arrest, union members are not at risk of arrest for participating in the strike. Please continue to sign up for picket duty and report as planned.

For those that may have any trepidation about defying an unjust order we want to provide some insights and education which has been reviewed by legal counsel.

There is verbiage which is referring to what we are doing as illegal.  We are here to say that they can bandy about whatever terms they wish but the plain truth is that this order is unfair. It is corporate protection. The Canada Industrial Relations Board Chairperson who first ruled against us was working as Air Canada’s lawyer until 2023. We’re challenging this unconstitutional attack on workers’ rights. The refusal of this Chairperson to recuse themselves is hard to fathom.

There is nothing illegitimate about resisting exploitation. We must stand for our Charter rights and will not withstand flawed labour laws. When laws protect billion-dollar profits over workers, defiance is necessary. Please know and understand this:

  • Every union in Canada has your back. From the Canadian Labour Congress to longshoremen to teachers. This is now much bigger than just CUPE. We are not alone.
  • No member will face consequences alone. CUPE will cover any legal costs and fines. We don’t abandon our own.
  • Just like we did with the Education Workers in Ontario in 2022, we won’t back down until we win. The public and the whole labour movement is behind us.
  • This is now a movement. The entire labour movement as a whole voted unanimously to support us last night—with actions, not just words.
  • Solidarity isn’t symbolic. Expect mass pickets, secondary actions, and nationwide protests if Air Canada refuses to come back to the bargaining table.

We will leave you all with some food for thought. They want you scared. We want you proud! Trust your union – not Air Canada. Air Canada’s plans won’t fly today because of YOUR courage. Never underestimate the resolve of a flight attendant. We have weathered many things, and this historic event will be a story we will tell those who come after us. We will remember.

All the things that so many take for granted were hard fought by union memberships who came before. Things like an 8-hour workday, weekends, and safety laws were won through “illegal” strikes too. We are on the right side of history and fairness. We are strong. We are united.

We thank you for your continued solidarity and encourage all members to remain united during this critical time.

“Justice is the application of law to life, not just the application of laws to facts.”

Bargaining Committee Update – 42 – Emergency Meeting on Air Canada Strike

As you know, CUPE members working as Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flight attendants and service directors have been on strike since August 16 at 12:58 a.m. EDT.

Just after 1:00 a.m. EDT on August 17, the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) ordered the striking flight attendants to “resume their duties” by 2:00 p.m. the same day. You are invited to attend a Zoom call with the National Officers and representatives from the Air Canada Component on Monday, August 18, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. EDT in order to provide an update and answer any questions you may have.

Bargaining Committee Update – 40 – Members stranded outside of Canada on Layover

We have worked through the administrative process to assist members who are stranded abroad on layover outside of Canada.  We have created a Google form which will need to be filled out.

We understand how difficult it is to be away from crew base and not being able to return.  We reiterate that your Union is here to provide support. Please fill out the attached form to request financial assistance for hotel charges for room and taxes only (if employer does not continue to pay), per diems up to a maximum of $100 CDN per day (if the employer ceases to provide them), or transportation to crew base for extenuating personal reasons only. There may also be some of our junior members who are not able to pay their meal expenses and who need help. Please fill out all fields in the attached form and we will confirm and verify your submissions.

Bargaining Committee Update – 39 – Membership Update August 17, 2025

As many members are likely aware, today was a Day of Action at airports across the country from coast to coast.
https://mailchi.mp/a0844afc7651/bargaining-committee-update-37-8110910

We have received overwhelming support from the public and from Union workers everywhere.  This is an historic moment for labour and for workers across the country.

There was a late-night hearing at the Canada Industrial Relations Board with your Bargaining Committee, private legal counsel and legal representatives from CUPE National.

Air Canada legal counsel representatives also attended.  The hearing was being held in relation to the decision of Minister of Jobs and Families Patty Hajdu to order us back to work. She has exercised her authority under section 107 of the Canadian Labour Code to direct the Canada Industrial Relations Board to “order the parties to resume and continue their operations and duties”.

As of 14:00 EDT on August 17th, 2025, the CIRB has ordered Air Canada to resume operations and for Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flight attendants to resume their duties. Further, they have ordered that the Collective Agreement that expired, be extended. You can find the Air Canada press release HERE.

CUPE National President Mark Hancock made it loud and clear that our members will NOT be returning to work until such time as the government orders Air Canada back to the bargaining table where we can reach a tentative agreement that our members can vote on.  We will not have our rights and protections removed.

For members who are overseas and being advised by the employer to report for work it is our position that we are still on strike, and you are not required to report to work.  If you are impacted in a negative way after 14:00 EDT please reach out to us and we will assist you.

For those who are stranded mid-pairing and seeking direction from the union you are now wondering what will happen and when there might be a resolution.  We cannot say when that might happen. What we can tell you is that you have the full support of the union and have put processes into place.

If you are contacted by the company, you are not required to answer your phone.  If you do, please state: “My Union advised that we are still on strike. They have instructed me not to return to work until advised by them. If you have any questions, please contact my union”. It is important to note that it is NOT a criminal offense to remain on strike.

If you are advised by the employer that you will not receive per diems or have run out of the ability to pay for your meal expenses CUPE National has committed to providing funding for this.

If it is absolutely necessary for you to get back to Canada (one of our four crew bases) for personal reasons, the Air Canada Component and CUPE National will pay for the costs of your transportation. This includes any flights to get you back.

For those members who have not yet done so, please sign up for picketing duties to receive compensation from the Union. If you have any questions about that go to https://accstrikehq.ca/ for more information.

We know and understand that for some of our members this is a challenging scenario.  Please know that we are here for you. Do NOT hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns you have.  We will all get through this together and we will leave no member without resources or support.

Keep in mind that there is strength in numbers. There are 10,517 of us and the whole country is standing behind us. We are fighting for what is right. While we stand together, the employer cannot break our solidarity. If they come after any single member they will understand very quickly that the Union has their back.

In solidarity,

Your Bargaining Committee
